Whether you’re a recent chiropractic school graduate or an experienced professional looking to open your own, here’s what you need to know about a business license to practice as a chiropractor in the United States.
People trust chiropractors for a variety of reasons. One reason is that patients sometimes experience instant satisfaction when a treatment alleviates symtoms of short-term or long-term backpain. In fact, a survey of nearly 8,000 people found more 75% of people seeking treatment for backpain found that chiropractic care was “very effective.”
National and State Licenses
You need to take and pass the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE) exam in order to practice chiropractic care. The exam is a series of tests that are taken during your chiropractic school program.
It’s important to make sure you have completed the require coursework to become a Doctor of Chiropractic, or DC. This license is required in all 50 U.S. States, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. Additionally, you’re required to have passed and/or completed a state exam in the area you which to practice.Only five states don’t require additional state-specific qualifications. Those are Colorado, Kentucky, New York, Rhode Island, and Virginia. These states only require you to pass the national exam for chiropractic certification. Some states will reciprocate your license from another state. However, this isn’t always the case. So, make sure to double-check state regulations before you cross state lines for a new job.
What Do I Need to Know for the State Test?
Each state’s licensing exam is different, so you should research carefully and prepare according to the requirements of the state you practice in.
However, state tests have something in common. Most state tests assess your understanding of local rules and regulations, scope of practice, and requirements to maintain your reputation as a chiropractor.
The method of taking the national exam is also different. Some states offer continuous testing. Others offer a limited number of tests on specific dates and years. For more information, please contact the state in which you would like to practice.
States issue their own licenses, so the steps are different. Always check with your local jurisdiction before you are ready to apply for a license. That’s why licensing is one of the most important steps in starting a successful chiropractic practice.
